STEM in 3Z

Calling all P.I.s …PROBLEM INVESTIGATORS!

The Prince wants to get to the castle to wake up Sleeping Beauty. He has encountered a deep river that his horse will not cross. He needs a  bridge built quickly and knows that as an engineer, you have the skills to build a prototype for this structure. He is coun(ng on your skills with the five P’s: problem solving, planning, perseverance, patience, and presentation as you engineer an answer!

Here’s the problem: We need you to develop a prototype for the bridge.
Use what you know about structures to build a bridge that can hold weight.
The bridge must have a height of at least 6 inches and be at least 8 inches wide.

You will be awarded points as follows:
1 Point for each penny that the  bridge holds
1 Point for every inch over 6 inches height.

 Your materials: • 50 3X5 index cards • 12 inches of masking tape • Scissors • Pennies • Ruler

This bridge ended up holding 7 pennies.
It was 6 inches tall and 8 inches wide.

24 Points
The bridge above held 18 pennies.
It was 8 1/2 inches tall and over 12 inches wide.
