Today's STEM Challenge

We have read several versions of the story The Three Little Pigs and their attempts to build houses. Now it is your turn to create a model house that can stay standing when huffed and puffed upon.
Challenge; Can you imagine, design, and build a model house that can remain standing when blown on by a wolf (hair dryer set on low)?

Super Challenge; Can you imagine, design, and build a model house that can remain standing when blown on by a wolf (hair dryer set on high)

Directions:
1- You must complete numbers 1,2, and 3 on your design loop before choosing materials.

2- You may only use materials from the materials list.

3- Your house must be at least 6 inches tall,  7 inches wide, and 7 inches long.

4- You must attach your house to a cardboard base.

5- After you complete your house, it will be tested by the teacher.

STEM in 3Z

Calling all P.I.s …PROBLEM INVESTIGATORS!

The Prince wants to get to the castle to wake up Sleeping Beauty. He has encountered a deep river that his horse will not cross. He needs a  bridge built quickly and knows that as an engineer, you have the skills to build a prototype for this structure. He is coun(ng on your skills with the five P’s: problem solving, planning, perseverance, patience, and presentation as you engineer an answer!

Here’s the problem: We need you to develop a prototype for the bridge.
Use what you know about structures to build a bridge that can hold weight.
The bridge must have a height of at least 6 inches and be at least 8 inches wide.

You will be awarded points as follows:
1 Point for each penny that the  bridge holds
1 Point for every inch over 6 inches height.

 Your materials: • 50 3X5 index cards • 12 inches of masking tape • Scissors • Pennies • Ruler

This bridge ended up holding 7 pennies.
It was 6 inches tall and 8 inches wide.

24 Points
The bridge above held 18 pennies.
It was 8 1/2 inches tall and over 12 inches wide.
